Student Excellence

Developing Mutual Respect & Care for Those Around Us

Advanced learners receive tailored support to maximize potential and extend understanding.

Student Excellence

At Bimbadeen Heights Primary School, we’re committed to creating an inclusive, supportive learning environment where every child can achieve their fullest potential. Our teaching and support system is designed not only to cater to the typical learner but also to provide tailored challenges for advanced learners and additional support for students who need it. For real learning to thrive, we know that every child must feel safe, happy, and confident in themselves, so we emphasise a strong wellbeing program alongside academic support.

In each class, some students demonstrate advanced learning capabilities. At Bimbadeen Heights, all students have individual learning goals developed with their teachers, designed to support each child in reaching their full potential. For advanced learners, teachers plan and deliver targeted extension tasks that align with the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and challenge students to think critically, creatively, and analytically. These tasks may involve applying reasoning strategies to explain their thinking, identifying examples to support a concept, and exploring non-examples that challenge it. Advanced learners often engage with higher-level books, secondary-level resources, or lateral extension projects that foster deeper inquiry and complex understanding.

Beyond the classroom, advanced learners have opportunities to participate in specialised programs that further extend their learning:

● Maths Olympiad: This competition encourages students to tackle challenging mathematical problems, enhancing their problem-solving and analytical skills.
● Maths Explorer Program: A hands-on program introducing students to advanced math concepts, providing real-world applications and interactive learning experiences.
● John Monash Science School Excursion Programs: Year 5 and 6 students participate in Mini Mathematicians, which encourages advanced math exploration, and Little Scientists, Big Science, which immerses them in scientific inquiry through hands-on experiments.
● Tournament of Minds (Years 4-6): A creative problem-solving competition where teams tackle complex challenges in STEM, Language and Literature, and Social Sciences, promoting innovation and teamwork.
● Science Talent Search (Years F-6): This inquiry-based competition encourages students to explore scientific questions, design experiments, and present their findings in a creative and rigorous format.
● Victorian High-Ability Program: Selected high-achieving students explore advanced topics and collaborate with peers across the state in this engaging, challenging program.

Students with exceptional potential are also encouraged to participate in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) in areas like Reading, Writing, Spelling, Maths, Science, and ICT. For our highest achievers, Bimbadeen Heights covers the cost of these assessments, which offer valuable insights for further learning and provide certificates that support students in reaching selective secondary school pathways.

These enrichment programs, together with thoughtfully planned classroom tasks, ensure that advanced learners at Bimbadeen Heights are continually challenged and inspired to excel.
